In the last years, the sister island of Malta, Gozo, attracted hundreds of visitors during the Christmas period. This is due to the fact that numerous Christmas-related events are organised during the month of December 2018 and the beginning of January 2019. The events range from Concerts, Crib Exhibitions, Christmas Parade, Christmas Pageant, Holy Night Mass, Children World (Fun for Kids), Christmas Village, New Year’s Eve Celebrations to the Adoration of the Magi.
In the following paragraphs, we are going to mention well-known events that you should visit during this festive season. Furthermore, we will also be providing you information that you might find useful during the Christmas period.
Official Opening of the Christmas Festivities
The official opening of the Christmas Festivities will be held on Saturday 1st December, 2018 at Republic Street and Independence Square at 19.30.
A children choir made up of children from different schools and choirs will participate during this opening ceremony. This choir is accompanied by the Junior Folk Band. They will parade up to ‘Pjazza t-Tokk’ (Independence Square), where the Minister for Gozo will switch on the Christmas tree, the lights of the main street of Victoria, Republic Street and also other various street decorations in secondary streets around the capital city.
A 3D mapping light show on the facade of Banca Giuratale will follow.
Free mulled wine or hot chocolate will be offered to all people present whilst being entertained by the well-known Mae-Band.

Concerts, Pageants and Musical Plays
During the months of December and the beginning of January, numerous concerts and Musical Plays with the participation of well-known local and foreign choirs, local bands and local performers will be organised. These performers or artists will perform concerts, pageants or musical plays related to the Christmas season. These events are held in different architectural Gozitan churches and chapels, squares and halls.
Cribs Exhibitions (Il-Presepju)
One shall visit the various mechanical and static artistic cribs exhibitions which are scattered around the island. One can witness the details of each crib narrating the story of the Birth of Jesus.
The island of Gozo also hosts the Live Nativity Scene most notably Betlehem, organised in Ghajnsielem. Furthermore, in other villages such as in Nadur and Xaghra, there will be also Live Nativity Scene where one can visit during this festive season.
During the month of December, one shall also visit the numerous Christmas related exhibitions where the exhibitors will exhibit items related to Christmas and churches.
On Saturday 22nd December, 2018 at 20.00, Republic Street in Victoria will host the Christmas Parade. The parade ends in Independence Square. During this parade, one can witness the different Christmas characters including Father Christmas, Snowmen, Christmas Bells and Christmas Trees, amongst other cartoon characters. Furthermore, the Parade will be with the participation of the local people wearing beautiful costumes.
Children World (Dinja tat –Tfal)
Children are also invited to visit the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria on Sunday 16th December, 2018 from 10.00 till 20.00 in order to experience the Children World. Here, children will have the opportunity to meet well-known animated characters and also have fun in the numerous of activities and games prepared for them including unlimited rides, face painting and arts and crafts, amongst others. All gifts will go to Puttinu Cares. Entrance is free of charge.
The Christmas Village is going to be held from Sunday 9th December, 2018 in Gozitano Agricultural Village in Xewkija. One can visit the different stalls including food stalls, tastings, mulled wine, Christmas pastries, coffee stall, farmers market, honey stall, plants and poinsettia stall, amongst other stalls. During this event, there will be also activities for children, live singing and entertainment by local bands, choirs and performers, tastings of different local products and exhibition by the (VCG) Military Vehicle Club Gozo.
Other Christmas Village called ‘Swejjaq tal-Milied’ is going to be held in the main square of Saint Lawrence on Saturday 8th December, 2018 from 16.00 onwards. There will be Christmas stalls with typical Christmas related food and drink and local artisan works. There will be also family entertainment, a traditional Christmas Fair that includes turkeys and also a children’s area. The event ends with a concert by Cash & Band.
Ta’ Dbiegi in Gharb will also host the annual Christmas Village where you can take the opportunity to buy unique handcrafted Christmas gifts such as silver artefacts. Leather covers, glass, pottery and metal items amongst other items. Personalised gifts will be also available. Kids will have the opportunity to take photos with Father Christmas and they can also participate in open workshops. The Crafts village is open from Friday 14th until Monday 24th December, 2018. During weekdays, the village is open from 10.00 until 20.00 while during weekends, the village is open from 10.00 until 21.00.
The village of Nadur is also hosting the typical Christmas village. The Christmas villages will includes the Santa’s House where Kids have the possibility to take and print photos. There will be also live entertainment, marches and games amongst other activities. The event is going to be held on Wednesday 19th December, 2018 from 19.00 onwards in the main square of Nadur. All donations collected during the event will be given to the Malta Community Chest fund. In case of bad weather, the event will be held on the following day.
The Christmas market in Villa Rundle in the capital city of Gozo will be held during the month of December starting from Sunday 2nd December, 2018. Gozo artisans stalls will be participating in this event.
The organisation ‘Kummissjoni Zghazagh Fontana’ is organizing its first edition of ‘Milied fl-Ghejjun’ at Fountain Square in Fontana. The event will take place on Saturday 15th December, 2018 at 19.00. Stalls with Christmas ornaments, crafts, Christmas related food and drink and traditional Christmas candy, amongst others. Children choirs, local singers are participating. Children can take a photo with Father Christmas and are entitled for a free gift.
Holy Night Mass
A Maltese Christmas tradition is the Holy Night Mass celebrated in each chapel or church around the island on Christmas Eve. Before the Mass, the traditional sermon of the Child recounting the birth of Baby Jesus will be held in the parish church.
New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Festive atmosphere provided by live local performers and singers to mark the end of the Year 2018 and Welcome the New Year 2019. The Travellers, Gianni & The Crosswalk Gang and the well-established international guest Jonas Blue will be all taking part in this event. Thus, come, and join in Independence Square & St. George’s Square in Victoria, to start the New Year 2019 off with a bang. The event starts at 21.30.
Adoration of the Magi
The Adoration of the Magi held on Sunday 6th January, 2019 will close this festive season. The Three Wise Men will make the triumphal entrance in the Live Nativity Scene on the feast of Epiphany. The Three Wise Men will offer their gifts (Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh) to Baby Jesus. This public manifestation will be held in Qala, Xaghra and also in Betlehem in Ghajnsielem, Gozo.
